Issue 17: "Dark Mirror"
"For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." With the release of April's Issue 17: Dark Mirror, the newest free update of City of Heroes, the game you love now has the visual depth, contrast, and richness it deserves! Dark Mirror includes a superior graphics rendering process, dubbed "Ultra Mode," that gives City of Heroes a heightened level of detail in lighting, reflections, shadows, and water effects. Paragon City™ and the Rogue Isles™ have never looked better. In addition to Ultra Mode, as part of Issue 17, you will confront a new and nefarious foe who will be able to match your character blow for blow. Other Issue 17: Dark Mirror features include:
Features
Ultra Mode Ultra Mode includes a superior graphics rendering process for players who have higher-end graphic cards. Each feature can be enabled or disabled in the graphics menu options and will be scalable. Ultra Mode works on both Macs and PCs. In specific, it offers dynamic shadows, screen-space ambient occlusion, and dynamic environment reflections (including planar reflections and environment mapping of reflective surfaces). Epic Archetypes Unlocked at Level 20 Previously, you had to have at least one character at level 50 to make an epic archetype character. No more! Now you can create an epic archetype character as long as you have any one character at level 20 or higher. Animated Tails No more tails lying about like dead weight! You will now be able to select tail body parts that will react to your movement and have a swaying or swishing idle animation mode. You will need to go to a tailor to upgrade to the animated version. Content New Story Arcs: Issue 17: Dark Mirror features two new Hero and two new Villain story arcs for levels 20-30. Each of these story arcs has four missions, and the story arcs highlight the Dark Mirror's sinister new enemy. Acquire first Hero story arc in Talos Island, and the first Villain arc in Sharkhead Isle. Silver Mantis Strike Force Update: The Silver Mantis Strike Force will now be available to all Villains, not just supergroups. You now can access the Silver Mantis Strike Force via Silver Mantis, located in Sharkhead Isle. You can also run this Task Force from your supergroup computer. Positron Task Force Update: This Task Force has been split into two halves and dramatically upgraded and updated to ramp up the fun. The final battle of the Task Force takes place in the Faultline Dam and incorporates the new Dark Mirror enemy. New Badges: Along with adding badges for 500 Badges Earned, 750 Badges Earned, and 1,000 Badges Earned, we are adding new exploration badges to city zones, almost doubling the number of exploration badges. You can learn new Accolades for finding all of the exploration badges in each city zone. New Player Emotes: We'll let you know more about the new emotes soon. Quality of Life Improvements Craftable Temporary Powers: You will now have a much cleaner and more consistent way of finding and crafting temporary powers. Increased Mission Count: You can now have seven active missions (previously three). Show Last Objective: This UI improvement lets you find your last objective on a mission map, making it easier to find something you've missed. Auction House: The UI gives you new options for sorting search results, your Auction House inventory is now separated by clearly marked tabs based on the item's status, the Auction House text entry box now autocompletes, and a single click on a recipe displays all salvage needed for that recipe. In-Game E-mail: You can now use in-game e-mails to send Influence/Infamy to your own characters or to other players' characters via in-game e-mails. (You still cannot send Influence, Infamy, or items from a Hero to a Villain or vice versa.) Mission Architect Improvements Experience: You can now handpick the powers for custom enemies and still receive experience for them (within game balance limits). New Maps: We have added approximately 20 new unique maps. Giant Monsters: You can now add giant monsters to some outdoor maps. Exit Mission on Complete: You can now specify that players have to leave the mission manually on completion. Escort Missions: "Lead to place" technology allows you more control over escort objectives.

Time-Traveling Strike Force Assassinates President Marchand!
On January 21st, 2010 several members of the Injustice Force and Shadow Wolves joined together to form a time-traveling Strike Force to ensure that Lord Recluse would assume power over the Rogue Isles in the past of 1963. Through trials of misinformation, a mulish contact (Mender Tesseract), and surviving three fates worse than death, the Strike Force proved it’s dedication to Lord Recluse and finally made it to the Marchland Building in St. Martial where they completed their mission and ensured Lord Recluse’s reign.
The members of the time-traveling Strike Force were: Dark Medusa, Gravical, Luna Nightmare, Omega, Psyice, Ratchet, Visas Marr (all members of the Injustice Force) and Draxel (member of the Shadow Wolves).
On January 13th, 2010 Omega, overlord of the Injustice Force, met with Draxel, leader of the Shadow Wolves, in the Port Oaks Arena to discuss the terms of the new alliance between their two villaingroups.
Originally the Shadow Wolves were nothing more than a small time gang lead by the thug Kraven until he was killed and replaced by Wolves member Draxel. Draxel, a cold and ruthless young woman, has since transformed the Shadow Wolves into a tight nit team of villains willing to perform any task that guarantees them a lucrative payoff, including blackmail, extortion, theft, kidnapping, and assassination. The Shadow Wolves often act as mercenaries for other villaingroups, and have a sound reputation for getting the job done no matter the odds.
With the addition of the Shadow Wolves to the Injustice Force coalition, the overall threat level of these villaingroups has increased substantially.
On January 10th, 2010, an alliance of evil was formed between the malevolent leaders of the Injustice Force and the Prime Evils.
The Prime Evils is a small villaingroup comprised of the most wicked and vile villains of the Rogue Isles (and beyond) whom have come together to bring about the six signs of the Apocalypse, those being Deceit, Chaos, Misery, Destruction, Terror, and Hatred. The Prime Evils are lead by the demons Death Immortal, the Lord of Terror, and Chaos Evolved, the Lord of Hatred (pictured above with Omega). While the Prime Evils may be small in number, they are truly a fearsome force to be reckoned with. Coupled with the might of the Injustice Force, it is doubtful that the heroes of Paragon City can hope to overcome them.

FATHER TIME MISSION
Players will once again be able to take on a very special mission from Father Time. Snaptooth has kidnapped Baby New Year in order to keep Father Time from passing on the chronological mantle. If he keeps Baby New Year locked away forever, guarded by the Red Caps and allies among the Tuatha, winter will never give way to spring and the universe as we know it may come to an end. Heroes and Villains can again band together to tackle this task!

Candy Canes will again be abundant this year. This salvage is found with every present that Heroes and Villains "successfully" open and can be redeemed with the Candy Keeper located in the Pocket D ski chalet for a variety of holiday rewards.
WINTERS GIFT ENHANCEMENT SET
This holiday themed enhancement set is a Universal Travel Power enhancement set that will work in all travel powers and is only available during the winter event.
IMPORTANT INFO
Before you launch yourselves into the action, here are a few facts you should bear in mind to enjoy the 2009 Winter Event to its fullest:
· If you are in Lord Winter's Realm and the event timer runs out, you will be returned to Atlas Park (Heroes) or Mercy Island (Villains) rather than the zone you originally entered from (unless you entered from a PvP zone).
· The Winter Lord may not spawn in Mercy Island and Port Oakes.
· The Winter Event does not run in the Co-operative or Hazard zones.
· The Winter Lord will spawn in Bloody Bay, Siren's Call and Warburg but not in Recluse's Victory. Be careful though, since they are PvP zones, you may accidentally attack another player through the 'Tab' keyboard button or through your pets.
· If your team gets split to two different maps of Lord Winter's Realm due to the zone cap, you can rejoin each other through Lord Winter's Realm Portal. Please note that the primary purpose of Lord Winter's Realm Portal is to allow split teams to rejoin one another.
Happy holidays to you all!

Injustice Force Seizes Nexus Of Thorns!
On 11-20-09 the Injustice Force met with the demon Sparcetriel, whom was willing to share its secret knowledge as part of its revenge against the Circle of Thorns. The first thing the beast wanted was for the Injustice Force to prove its ability by defeating members of the Circle, a task easily accomplished by the villains.
Next, the Injustice Force was tasked with stopping the united forces of Longbow, Wyvern, and the Legacy Chain from interrupting the villiangroup’s planned attack on the Tree of Thorns with a strike of their own. The Injustice Force defeated the operation’s leaders, clearing the way for their forthcoming assault.
Finally, with the villains’ abilities proven and the heroic forces out of the way, the Injustice Force attacked the Thorn Tree and stole the Nexus of Thorns. With its power, each of the five villains are able to reshape themselves into more powerful, deadlier villains than before!
To the “Power Thieves” of the Injustice Force, Omega, Phorcy, Ratchet, Shangarious, and Visas Marr, congratulations on earning the Thorn Robber badge!
On 11-15-09 the Justice Force and Justice Force - Reservists formed a coalition with the newly created High Society Alliance, a second division to the prominent High Society Order.
The High Society Alliance shares all of the same rules and regulations of it’s parent supergroup, the HSO, except for the requirement for members to hold a title. This has given the HSA a broader range of superhero recruits across Paragon City. The High Society Alliance is lead by Lady Luminescence (pictured above with JF leader Acroyear).
The Justice Force is proud to have the High Society Alliance as a member of it’s coalition allies, and looks forward to battling crime and injustice side-by-side with them!

Crystal Of Serafina Stolen By Strike Force Wild!
On 11-6-09, in an effort to seek favor from Arachnos villain Scirocco, several villains from the Injustice Force teamed with members of Bloodbath to form Strike Force Wild. Under direction from Scirocco’s servant Ice Mistral Strike Force Wild undertook the task of stealing the Crystal of Serafina from the Circle of Thorns.
Strike Force Wild soon discovered that the Circle of Thorns had broken the Crystal of Serafina into several shards. Traveling around the Rogue Isles the Strike Force recovered all of the shards from the mages, stopping them from creating a crystalline psychic network that could produce mass mind control effects on those within range of the vibrations of the crystals. Before reporting back to Ice Mistral the members of Strike Force Wild each secretly took a piece of the crystal so that they may posses a small portion of Serafina’s power.
The members of Strike Force Wild were: Dark Medusa, Luna Nightmare, Omega, Ratchet, Sinister Sister (not pictured above) (all members of the Injustice Force), Dark Widow, and Ludex (both members of Bloodbath).
Congratulations to all members of Strike Force Wild for earning the Crystal Keeper badge!
On 10-29-09 Omega, overlord of the Injustice Force, met with the maniacal Scythus, leader of The Reaper’s Assembly, a small band of fanatical villains bent on “cleansing the imperfection of life from this accursed world.” The purpose of the meeting was to finalize the details of the newly formed coalition between the two villaingroups. Although the goals of Scythus and his followers could one day become a problem for Omega and his minions, for now the arch-villain is willing to use The Reaper’s Assembly to increase the powerbase of the Injustice Force within the Rogue Isles.
The alliance of evil formed by the Injustice Force now includes The Reaper’s Assembly, the House of the Forsaken, the Masterminds of War, and the Grim Reapers.

Heroes Prevent Magical Disaster!
On 10-9-09 members of the Justice Force journeyed to Croatoa to convince the sorceresses of the Cabal to halt the casting of a dangerous spell that would not only destroy their enemies the Red Caps, but could also unintentionally threaten other forms of magical life throughout the world. Working with the witch Katie Hannon, the heroes Cinnamon Storm, Coda Jax, Dragon Heart, Icy-Blue, Psi-Blade, and Speed Serpent were dubbed Task Force Rue. In order to gain the trust of the sorceresses, the heroes had to battle and defeat the Cabal leader Mary Macomber ten times. Succeeding in this difficult mission, Task Force Rue earned the respect of the elders of the Cabal, who agreed not to use their ancient spell against the Red Caps.
Earning Mary Macomber trust, Task Force Rue was given the task of rescuing one of the Cabal’s most powerful members, the sorceress Amy Johnson, who had been kidnapped by the Red Caps. Once freed from the vile creatures Amy told the heroes of a sinister plot by the Red Caps that involved Katie Hannon.
Learning that Katie’s home was overrun by Red Caps, Task Force Rue wasted no time in removing the unwanted visitors from her residence. In doing so they battled and defeated Wormtail, who revealed that the Red Caps had captured Katie’s soul and were holding it in the Grim Vale.
Traveling to the spirit realm of the Grim Vale, Task Force Rue located Katie’s soul, and with the help of some of her fellow witches, freed it before the Red Caps could destroy her forever.
Congratulations to Task Force Rue for earning the Cabalist and Ten Times The Victor badges!

Guided by Mender Lazarus of Ouroboros, the heroes of the time traveling Task Force set in motion the events that lead to the downfall of the 5th Column several years ago.
